This research uses basic laboratory paradigms to understand how personality and social contextual factors place individuals at risk for developing substance use disorders. In addition to one project examining how the construct of impulsivity mediates the relationship between crack/cocaine use and risky sexual behavior, two particular areas of research are of note. One area explores intertemporal decision-making as an important and informative correlate of substance use, abuse, and relapse. A second area explores socio-cultural, cognitive and motivational factors underlying risk taking in general as well as risk taking associated with substance use.
