 Bio

Background Information

In May 1997 I graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Biological Anthropology.  Upon graduation I played professional basketball for a year before retiring after a serious injury to my legs.  In 1998 I began working as a Visuo-Cognitive Therapist at the Vision and Conceptual Development Center in Washington DC. which specializes in developmental optometry for both children and adults.  I administered individual therapy that was based on principles of Piaget and tailored to the specific needs of each patient.  The clientele ranged from children/adults with mild academic/professional impairment to the severely autistic.  Additionally, for two of the four years I served as therapist supervisor, overseeing the entire patient caseload as well as all of the therapists.

Research Interests

The first three years of my training have focused on the assessment and treatment of children/adolescents with Social Anxiety disorder.  Specifically, I have been working with the Social Effectiveness Training protocol which incorporates individual exposure therapy as well as a group social skills training component.  More recently I have begun to examine the co-occurrence of anxiety and sleep disorders in children.  I am interested in the assessment and treatment of these disorders as well as elucidating the risk/protective factors associated with the disorders both separately and in tandem.   I am currently investigating the propensity towards risky behaviors in a sleep restricted population.

Outside Interests

In my spare time I enjoy traveling and spending time with my husband.  I am also a big fan of suspense novels, cooking, and shopping.
