 Bio

Background Information

I graduated from California State University, Long Beach in May 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Under the direction of Dr. Sherry Span, I investigated locus of control within the 12-Step paradigm of Alcoholics Anonymous. I also worked as Dr. Span’s research assistant on a project examining the relation among cognitive functioning, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and substance use patterns in veterans enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California. In the summer of 2004, I worked in the Translational Research in Cognitive and Affective Mechanisms Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. Under the mentorship of Dr. Angus MacDonald, I investigated personality correlates of antisocial behavior in economic decision-making.

Research Interests

Broadly, my current research interests lie in substance use disorders and co-occurring psychopathology. My Master’s thesis research examined biobehavioral mechanisms underlying emotionality in Antisocial Personality Disorder and the role of psychopathic traits in treatment-seeking substance users. I am currently beginning work investigating longitudinal predictors of substance use patterns in schizotypy and social anhedonia as well as the effects of substance use on schizotypal traits and social anhedonia.

Throughout my research career, I would like to examine mechanisms underlying substance use trajectories in individuals with co-occurring psychiatric disorders and how these mechanisms may affect treatment outcomes. I am particularly interested in using this knowledge to inform the development of better substance use intervention methods for dually-diagnosed individuals in underserved and incarcerated populations.

Outside Interests

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to music, dancing (African, jazz, hip hop, etc.) making feeble attempts at playing guitar, and singing. I'm a complete ham when it comes to performing (I was nicknamed "Karaoke Diva" - sssshhhhh).
